Congratulations to our PhD candidate Madelyn Mangan who has recently been awarded $6,660 by The Holsworth Wildlife Research Endowment in 2020 Round 2, from the Ecological Society of Australia!
Madelyn's project is titled: "Uncovering genetic mechanisms of decreased susceptibility to Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in the endangered Fleay’s barred frog (Mixophyes fleayi) across its range"
The funding will help Madelyn investigate how pathogen-mediated evolution of resistance to the devastating amphibian chytrid fungal pathogen (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) at the Major Histocompatibility Complex locus might be contributing to the recovery of Fleay's barred frogs (Mixophyes fleayi).
She aims to (1) evaluate trends in population genetic structure of M. fleayi throughout its range, (2) determine how MHC variation is associated with infection status and pathogen load, and (3) investigate whether alleles associated with reduced infection are being selected for in recovering populations.
