Biodiversity Health
Research Team
Our biodiversity is under threat
Numerous species have gone extinct in recent years and many more are declining.
Some of the key threatening processes include habitat loss and fragmentation, invasive species, environmental pollution, disease, overexploitation, climate change and severe weather events.
Mitigating these threats is an urgent and critical challenge that requires collaborative effort, scientific advancement, and a commitment to preserving the richness of life on our planet.
"Biodiversity is the greatest treasure we have... Its diminishment is to be prevented at all cost"
(Thomas Eisner)
Biodiversity health is...
A measure of the diversity, abundance, and overall well-being of the species and ecosystems that make up the natural world (species and genetic diversity, ecosystem function, resilience and adaptability).
Diverse ecosystems are more resilient, productive, and better able to provide critical ecosystem services to humans, such as clean air and water, food production and climate regulation. Assessing and promoting biodiversity health is essential for conserving ecosystems and species.
"Our health relies entirely on the vitality of our fellow species on Earth"
(Harrison Ford)
Who we are
Empower
Growth
We are a passionate group of scientists, researchers and environmentalists united by a common purpose: to protect and restore our planet's biodiversity.
Our transdisciplinary team combines expertise in conservation biology, ecology, veterinary science, genetics, mathematical modelling and environmental science to address the complex challenges facing our natural world.
Our team is dedicated to understanding, conserving, and restoring the intricate web of life that sustains us all.
"Each species on our planet plays a role in the healthy functioning of natural ecosystems,
on which humans depend"
(William H. Schlesinger)
What we do
Research: We conduct cutting-edge research to better understand the dynamics, relative importance, impacts, and ways of mitigating various threatening processes affecting wildlife populations. We focus particularly on diseases affecting biodiversity and the effects of environmental contaminants on wildlife.
Conservation: We are committed to improving conservation management. Through strategic partnerships with organisations, government and local communities, we aim to make a positive impact on the ground.
Education: Spreading awareness and knowledge is critical for global change. We are passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists with our teaching and public outreach work.
Advocacy: We strive to influence decisions affecting biodiversity health through actively engaging with policymakers.
"For if one link in nature's chain might be lost, another might be lost, until the whole of things will vanish by piecemeal"
(Thomas Jefferson)
